The Discord Debacle
The Discord Debacle (DD) is a passion project, it is an imaginary in-person event I created that will be hosted by Discord that’ll have just as much hype as Comicon, Anime Expo, Dream Con, TwitchCon, and other kinds of conventions. Gamers mostly used Discord at first and ever since the pandemic hit the world, its users has skyrocketed with many new people utilizing the program. With that being said, DD is a place where everyone can attend no matter who they are since the culture that Discord has cultivated has become so diverse and unique.
DD can be seen as “a better HypeSquad” since HypeSquad was created sometime in 2016 as a way to host meetups and communities as a marketing strategy to spread the word of Discord. HypeSquad’s intended purpose is no longer needed since Discord is much more widely known now as opposed to half a decade ago and I believe it should get an upgrade.
All designs were sketched out beforehand and then brought into Adobe Illustrator for vectorization because by observing Discord’s style, it’s plausible that they create their illustrations in Illustrator. After creating all of the graphics I used Adobe Photoshop to help mock everything up. To add, Discord likes to incorporate 3D pieces here and there so I decided to make the explosion into 3D using Blender which will be used as the hero image and symbol in this project.
Convention Specific Deliverables
This website landing page is referenced from Discord’s official website UI and I decided to move forward with the mobile layout because users will most likely view this website on their phones rather than their computers.
Users wanting to purchase a ticket will be met with an authorization screen. Once they accept that Wumpus will get their Discord information, they will begin entering their name and email. Afterward, users will pick the type and quantity of tickets they want and choose their payment type. In the demo, the credit card payment option is selected, so users will enter their credit card info. Finally, a confirmation screen is shown to let the user know the payment has gone through. They are told to open their email app to view the confirmation email and keep the QR code secure.
The Debacle Badge is an explosion and the symbol of DD represents the outcome of an internal conflict not being able to keep itself under control anymore. Users will automatically get The Debacle Badge into their discord account for attending the convention and it’ll only be available during this time and it will never appear again.

With the announcement of DD, discord will be releasing a brand new clothing line: The Debacle Collection. This collection introduces a handful of fun and quirky characters and their story of collaboration is portrayed throughout the apparel mock-ups above chronologically. Because the name “DD” plays an ironic twist to working together, the characters that I created take inspiration from inanimate objects, specifically work supplies.
